lowermarsh, fair enough. I think you're overestimating this. One cat more or less will not lead to your local bird population including the sparrowhawk becoming extinct and even the mice around your home should still be able to reproduce.
If you feed your cat well he or she won't need birds and mice for nourishment (a wildlife cat would need in the region of around 10-15 mice or birds a day to survive), so a pet cat would basically just hunt and kill the odd bird or mouse for entertainment and to relieve stress.
To a degree you can substitute this if you offer your cat enough playtime at home, giving it the chance to chase and hunt, even if it is just a toy.
But again: Your cat bringing home the odd mouse or bird is completely normal and it won't affect the overall natural balance between species around your home.

I know I sound like a cat hater but that's far from the case. When I was a kid we had loads of pets and it's time my kid got to have her own pet.
It's just that I consider the wild birds in my garden should be free to do their thing without having to worry about a predator that is only there because it has been introduced into their patch by a human.
If a cat takes out the local sparrowhawk's food supply I will fucking gutted, it's the sparrowhawk's manor not the pussy imposters'.

I got a Kitten at 8 weeks old.Never had an indoor Cat before so was a bit dubious about litter and things.A lot of litter these days have a scent added to them that actually encourages them to go use it.Never ever had one incident of him pissing or shitting away from it in 3 years.Clean out there litter once a day and change it completely every couple of weeks.
Scratching posts are a must to save your furniture.I plonked him down next to it and started scratching it myself and he immediately copied me.Never had one piece of furniture scratched.Don't forget to clip their claws every month or so.
Like someone else mentioned,how you treat them when there young makes all the difference.Lots of play and they'll become great companions.One more thing.Get them used to water at an early age,my cat loves jumping in the shower with me.Plus it will stop you getting shredded in later life if you try to wash them!
